From December 1539, Luther became involved in the designs of Philip I, Landgrave of Hesse to marry a lady-in-waiting of his wife, Christine of Saxony. Philip solicited the approval of Luther, Melanchthon, and Bucer, citing as a precedent the polygamy of the patriarchs.

16 de may. de 2024 · He married Princess Maria Amalia Kettler of Courland on 21 May 1673, in Kassel, Hesse, Germany. They were the parents of at least 13 sons and 6 daughters. He died on 23 March 1730, in his hometown, at the age of 75, and was buried in Kassel, Hesse-Nassau, Prussia, Germany.
