Hace 1 día · In 1865 when Thomas Fulljames gave up the post of cathedral architect the chapter offered it to (Sir) George Gilbert Scott, who was empowered to draw up plans for an extensive restoration.
In 1959 the choir screen of metal filigree work erected in 1870 was taken away to allow unrestricted view of the high altar from the nave, and at the same time the reredos designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott was removed.

Pearson also restored the north transept facade in the 1880s. The abbey was heavily damaged in the bombings that ravaged London in World War II, but it was restored soon after the war.
