John Clerk (later Clerk Maxwell) of Middlebie FRSE (1790–1856) was a Scottish advocate and father of the mathematical physicist James Clerk Maxwell. Life [ edit ] He was born in Edinburgh on 10 November 1790, the son of Janet Irving and Captain James Clerk.
24 de ene. de 2008 · John Clerk Maxwell had inherited the residue of the Middlebie estate, approximately 700 ha, in Kirkcudbrightshire, some 7 miles from Castle Douglas. The estate was poor and Maxwell senior built the laird's house, known as Glenlair.

James Clerk Maxwell was born on 13 June 1831 at 14 India Street, Edinburgh, to John Clerk Maxwell of Middlebie, an advocate, and Frances Cay, daughter of Robert Hodshon Cay and sister of John Cay. (His birthplace now houses a museum operated by the James Clerk Maxwell Foundation.)
23 de may. de 2018 · His father, John Clerk (Maxwell), younger brother of Sir George Clerk, M.P., inherited the Middlebie property and took the name Maxwell in consequence of some earlier legal manipulations which prevented the two family properties being held together.
