Based on Victor Hugo’s novel of the same name, the story, set in fifteenth century Paris, centers on Quasimodo, the deformed bell-ringer of Notre Dame Cathedral and his struggle to gain acceptance into society. The movie features nine original songs with lyrics by Schwartz and music by Alan Menken.
The musical score was composed by Alan Menken, with songs written by Menken and lyricist Stephen Schwartz. The Hunchback of Notre Dame premiered at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans on June 19, 1996, and was released in the United States on June 21.
