Richard Lumley-Saunderson was baptised in May 1725 at Lumley Castle, County Durham, England. He was the son of Thomas Lumley 3rd Earl of Scarbrough and Lady Frances Hamilton, Richard acquired the hyphenated surname of Lumley-Saunderson, 4th Earl of Scarbrough from his father, Thomas Lumley.
