It was most likely written after The Book of the Duchess , but its chronological relation to Chaucer's other early poems is uncertain.

The poem is regarded as the first of Chaucer's Italian-influenced period and there are echoes of the works of Ovid, Virgil's Aeneid and particularly Dante's Divine Comedy.
