Sir Richard de Brus (died 1287), Lord of Writtle was an English knight from Essex, commanding a Knight banneret for Edward I. He was a younger son of Robert de Brus, 5th Lord of Annandale and Isabella de Clare .

Richard de Brus was the younger son of Robert de Bruce (born in 1210) and his first wife Isobel, the daughter of Gilbert de Clare.His parents' marriage occurred about 1240 when Isobel was only about 13 years old, and Richard was born about 1250. Knighthood
A Sir Richard de Brewys, and a Sir Richard de Bruys, probably the same person, was a witness to documents dated 24 January 1278 and 29 May 1278, and although both spellings could be used for Brus, Richard de Brus is not referred to as a knight in any other documents, nor is there any other indication he was knighted, so it seems likely this is someone else.
Wife and child
M.E. Cumming Bruce's work Family Records of the Bruces and Cumyns, is unreliable and attaches Richard de Brus to incorrect parents, and claims that he had a wife, Alianore, who survived him, and married, secondly, Richard de Walays, and died 5th Ed. III, and a son Robert. As the inquisitions post mortem, cited above make clear, he was unmarried with no issue and his lands reverted to his father. Robert V de Brus (Robert de Brus), 5th Lord of Annandale (ca. 1215 – 31 March or 3 May 1295), was a feudal lord, justice and constable of Scotland and England, a regent of Scotland, and a competitor for the Scottish throne in 1290/92 in the Great Cause.
