In 1987, when he and his band the Range won Best New Artist at the Grammys, he bounded on stage, rocking an aw-shucks demeanor and a ridiculous ponytail. Lanky and a bit awkward with his 6-foot-4 frame, he grinned goofily and thanked family members, label executives and “my big brother and our head cheerleader Huey Lewis .”
