Renier of Montferrat (in Italian, Ranieri di Monferrato) (1162–1183) was the fifth son of William V of Montferrat and Judith of Babenberg. He became son-in-law of the Byzantine Emperor Manuel I Komnenos and Caesar in 1180, and was later murdered in a Byzantine power-struggle.

He was the son of William IV and his wife Otta d'Agliè, a daughter of Tibaldo d'Agliè. Renier was a powerful lord in his own time, appearing extensively in the contemporary documentation.

Theodore inherited the throne of Montferrat through his mother. The house of Montferrat had had close political and family ties with the Byzantines for a long time, ever since Manuel I Comnenus married his daughter, Maria, to Renier. of Montferrat, and gave Renier Thessaloniki as a pronoia.
