John Stewart, 1st Earl of Atholl ( c. 1437–1442 – 15 September 1512), [1] also known as Sir John Stewart of Balveny, was a Scottish nobleman and ambassador. Life. John Stewart, 1st Earl of Atholl (1566-1603) was a Scottish landowner. John Stewart was sixth Lord Innermeath and made Earl of Atholl in 1596. His parents were James Stewart, 5th Lord Innermeath and Helen Ogilvy, a daughter of James Ogilvy, Lord Airlie, and Helen Sinclair.

Robert Stewart, 1st Earl of Atholl (1316–1390), grandson of Robert I, ceased to be Earl of Atholl in 1367, and later became King Robert II in 1371. John Stewart, 2nd Earl of Atholl, his father resigned the title in favor of John on 31 May 1367; John later became King Robert III of Scotland in 1390.
He was created Earl of Atholl in around 1457, the first earl of the eighth creation of the title. He is believed to have had a hand in suppressing the rebellion of John Macdonald, 11th Earl of Ross, the last of the Lords of the Isles.
SIR JOHN STEWART OF BALVENY was born about 1440, created EARL OF ATHOLL about 1457, and died 1512. His first wife was Lady Margaret Douglas, Fair Maid of Galloway, daughter of Archibald Douglas, 5th Earl of Douglas and Lady Eupheme Graham. They had three daughters;- Lady Janet Stewart, married Alexander Gordon, Master of Sutherland.
