Examples of his session work from the late 1950s through the 1960s can be found on the two volumes of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar (Waikiki Records 319 and 320) and two more LPs titled Kani Ka Pila! Let's Play Music!
Always a folk music eclectic, Guard attempted to publicize the slack-key sounds of Hawaiian folk guitar. Guard worked closely in Honolulu with slack-key guitar icon Gabby Pahinui to record and produce Pure Gabby, an album of classic Hawaiian melodies played with slack key tunings.
Wayne Harada, reviewing "Gabby Pahinui's Hawaiian Band, Vol. 2" called it "truly a milestone in Hawaiian music." Of Gabby, Harada wrote "one of the greatest living innovators in Hawaiian music", referring to the "distinctive, layered instrumental harmonics" of his slack key styling.
