5 de jun. de 2009 · “The Prairie” was the third in order of Fenimore Cooper’s Leatherstocking Tales. Its first appearance was in the year 1827. The idea of the story had suggested itself to him, we are told, before he had finished its immediate forerunner, “The Last of the Mohicans.”
Imagistically Cooper's plot sets his little bands—the groups of outcasts led by Natty, Ishmael's family, the Sioux, and the Pawnees—to converge and tack away from each other. There is also much in the bursts of action—escapes, captures, shifting alliances, steering by moonlight—that evokes sea life.

The story dates are derived from dates given in the tales and span the period roughly of 1740–1806. They do not necessarily correspond with the actual dates of the historical events described in the series, which discrepancies Cooper likely introduced for the sake of convenience.
