He is often credited under the name of the 'Guard brothers' - a directing duo formed with his brother Tom at Cambridge University. Their first short film One Colour White, was written by David Mitchell and starred Mitchell, Robert Webb and Olivia Coleman, along with other members of Footlights.

Set in 1970s London, it stars Charles’ wife, Oscar-nominated actress Felicity Jones, alongside Aml Ameen as SAS officer Tempest and Colin Morgan as the former IRA member who has vowed to kill him to avenge the murder of his wife.
