Before the Space Age, no one knew what was on the other side of the Moon. Since 2009, Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter has been making some of the most detailed global maps of the Moon's surface, making it much easier for everyone to see what it's like on the other side.
The other face, most of which is never visible from the Earth, is therefore called the "far side of the Moon". Over time, some crescent-shaped edges of the far side can be seen due to libration. [9] In total, 59 percent of the Moon's surface is visible from Earth at one time or another.

The most striking difference evident in the Luna 3 pictures is the absence of the large, dark seas of cooled lava, called maria, that cover a substantial fraction of the Earth-facing near side. The far side is instead densely peppered with impact craters of every size and age.
