She was the oldest child of Theodore and Martha “Mittie” Bulloch Roosevelt, and sister to Theodore Roosevelt. Anna went by many names including “Bamie” (short for bambina) given to her by her mother, and Bye which she was called by her siblings and many nieces and nephews.
Anna Roosevelt Cowles (1855-1931) was Theodore Roosevelt’s elder sister. Born in the family’s brownstone at 28 East 20 th Street in New York City, she was always known as Bye or Bamie.
