Morgenthau was the father of Robert M. Morgenthau, who was district attorney of Manhattan for 35 years; Henry Morgenthau III, an American author and television producer; and noted pediatrician Dr. Joan Morganthau Hirschhorn.
His 1963 documentary, The Negro and the American Promise, featured interviews with Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, and James Baldwin. A Morgenthau-produced miniseries, South African Essay, was one of the first American programs to address apartheid.
