La cinta está basada en la novela Man on Fire, del escritor británico Philip Nicholson y publicada en 1980. Anteriormente, la historia había sido adaptada en la cinta Man on Fire (1987), dirigida por Élie Chouraqui y protagonizada por Scott Glenn.
