Eadred Ætheling (Old English Eadred Æþeling) (died c. 1012) was the fourth of the six sons of King Æthelred the Unready by his first wife Ælfgifu. He witnessed charters between 993 and 1012 or 1013, [2] but died before his father was forced to flee to Normandy in late 1013.

Very occasionally, in the well-known group of alliterative charters (on which see EHD 1, 340), we find the vernacular word æþeling used: Sawyer, nos. 566 (an Old English translation of an alliterative charter of Eadred, 955), 569 (Eadred, 955) and 1497 (a will which quotes from an alliterative charter).

Most of the redactions of Cyfraith Hywel award an edling a wergeld (galanas) and an insult payment (sarhaed) equivalent to that of the king.

Eadred's attitude towards his nephews is uncertain. Some charters are attested by both Eadwig and Edgar as cliton (medieval Latin for prince), but others by Eadwig as cliton or ætheling (Old English for prince) and Edgar as his brother.
