3 de may. de 2024 · The nine circles of hell, as depicted in Dante's Inferno, represent a gradual descent into increasing levels of sin and punishment—from the first circle, Limbo, to the ninth circle, which is reserved for the worst sinners.
We offer this short guide to the nine circles of Hell, as described in Dante’s Inferno. First Circle: Limbo The first circle is home to the unbaptized and virtuous pagans. It’s not Heaven, but as far as Hell goes, it isn’t too bad: It’s the retirement community of the afterlife.

As a Christian, Dante adds Circle 1 (Limbo) to Upper Hell and Circle 6 (Heresy) to Lower Hell, making 9 Circles in total; incorporating the Vestibule of the Futile, this leads to Hell containing 10 main divisions. This "9+1=10" structure is also found within the Purgatorio and Paradiso.

Based on his inclusion of both opposite-sex lovers and same-sex lovers in Purgatory, therefore on their way to Paradise (Purg. 26.28-48, 76-87), the sin punished in Hell may not be homosexual relations per se but only immoderate or promiscuous same-sex activity.
Dante is lost – it seems, to him, hopelessly so – and the path is blocked by three remarkable animals: a leopard, a lion, and a she-wolf. Just as he begins to despair, he encounters a remarkable man – the epic poet, Virgil. With Virgil as his guide, Dante moves towards the infamous gates of Hell, and the journey begins.
