Philip Kunia Pahinui (Hawaiian pronunciation:; April 22, 1921 – October 13, 1980), known as Gabby Pahinui, was a slack-key guitarist and singer of Hawaiian music.
His ability to master any stringed instrument coupled with his bright falsetto that became raspy with age and guttural deep tones made him a unique fixture on the Hawaiian music scene. Gabby’s was the raw, plaintive, earthy and powerful “under-the-stars” backyard music of Hawai‘i.

By his death in 1980, Gabby Pahinui , once a youth subculture hero, had become - and remains - an important force in contemporary Hawaiian instrumental music. His legacy is not only the consummate skill of his playing, but also the special spirit evident in his musical performance.
Following Gabby’s passing in the early 80’s, Kanikapila sessions were founded at “Pop’s” Gabby Pahinui’s namesake Waimanalo Park Pavilion to feature and perpetuate his Hawaiian style kiho‘alu-slack key music.
