King’s is one of the seven famous Cathedral Schools established by Henry VIII in 1541. Today we are a thriving, forward-thinking, independent day school with 740 pupils. We welcome boys and girls, aged 3 to 18, offering academic excellence and a celebrated range of co-curricular activities, underpinned by outstanding pastoral care.
King’s is a leading independent day school for girls and boys aged 3 to 18. With a rich history and close links to the Cathedral, we focus on the future - delivering a rounded education which provides our pupils with the academic skills and personal characteristics required for future success.
It is a Church of England comprehensive school, with a large academic Sixth Form. It was founded by Henry VIII in 1541 as the Cathedral School to educate the Cathedral choristers and this close link with the Cathedral is still valued and maintained today.
King's and the Cathedral The School has enjoyed a long history of close association with Gloucester Cathedral and the Abbey that preceded it. When William the Conqueror sent the Norman Abbot Serlo to Gloucester in 1072, he found that there were already eight boys being educated there.
