Sir Carew Raleigh or Ralegh (ca. 1550 – ca. 1625) was an English naval commander and politician who sat in the House of Commons at various times between 1586 and 1622. He was the elder brother of Sir Walter Raleigh .

Son of Sir Walter Raleigh, Carew owned West Horsley Place from the 1640s-1660s and is most likely the owner responsible for creating our beautiful red brick façade. Local Historian June Davey tells his story.

Carew Raleigh owned the estate between 1643-1665. Contemporary accounts record that, after the head had been displayed for the assembled crowd following the execution, it was placed in a red velvet or leather bag and presented to Raleigh’s widow, Elizabeth ‘Bess’ Raleigh (1565 – 1647).
