The development of nautical sciences, including the augmentation of pre-existing techniques and tools, on the Iberian Peninsula generated new technology and had a direct, visible, and lasting effect on long range ship board navigation.

Objetivo/contexto: Explicar cómo y en qué condiciones fueron construidos algunos de los instrumentos científicos más emblemáticos del mundo moderno sigue siendo un desafío para los historiadores de la ciencia y de la tecnología. Este principio afecta también a los instrumentos náuticos.
“Iberian science” refers not only to the new facts of nature discovered —new lands, new oceans, and new natural environments—but also to the emergence of new modes of studying and describing the natural world and new social settings.
