The protest led to widespread rioting and looting, including attacks on Newgate Prison and the Bank of England and was the most destructive in the history of London.

He was the last in seniority of four Aldermen, who, as supporters of the Court, were passed over in the elections for the Mayoralty in favour of junior Aldermen who were Whigs in the years 1772 to 1775.
