From early childhood, Blake spoke of having visions—at four he saw God “put his head to the window”; around age nine, while walking through the countryside, he saw a tree filled with angels.
In the nineteenth century, Catherine Blake1 was considered a perfect wife because she was a faint copy of William, like the third pulls of his color-printed drawings. She believed in his visions, helped him print and color his illuminated books, and stayed up late into the night while he received inspiration.
