  6. In 1439 Alan Stewart of Darnley and Thomas Boyd, chief of the Clan Boyd were at feud. [1] . At Polmaise Thorn, Thomas Boyd had attacked Alan Stewart and killed him. [1] . Another account says that Polmaise Thorne was three miles from Falkirk and that the feud between Boyd and Stewart had at that time been in its third year. [2] .

  7. Following his father´s death at the Battle of the Herrings in 1429, his older brother, Sir Alan Stewart of Darnley inherited the family estates and titles in Scotland. Sir Alan therefore returned to Scotland in 1437, and had resigned his French titles to Stewart with approval of Charles VII of France.
