John Ruthven, 3rd Earl of Gowrie (c. 1577 – 5 August 1600), was a Scottish nobleman who died in mysterious circumstances, referred to as the "Gowrie Conspiracy", in which he and/or his brother Alexander were attempting to kill or kidnap King James VI of Scotland for unknown purposes.

When John Ruthven 3rd Earl of Ruthven was born on 25 September 1575, in Ruthven Castle, Perthshire, Scotland, his father, William Ruthven 1st Earl of Gowrie, was 34 and his mother, Dorothea Stewart, was 26. He died on 5 August 1600, in his hometown, at the age of 24, and was buried in St John's Kirk, Perth, Perthshire, Scotland.
