Louise Taft. Louisa Maria "Louise" Torrey (September 11, 1827 – December 8, 1907) was the second wife of Alphonso Taft, and the mother of U.S. President William Howard Taft . Background. She was born in Boston, Massachusetts, the first daughter of Samuel Davenport Torrey (1789–1877) and his second wife, the former Susan Holman Waters (1803–1866).

She shared her husband’s interest in ancient history and archaeology. Together, they worked toward the ambitious goal of creating the nation’s finest Classics programs.

Alphonso Taft (November 5, 1810 – May 21, 1891) was an American jurist, diplomat, politician, Attorney General and Secretary of War under President Ulysses S. Grant. He was also the founder of the Taft political dynasty, and father of President and Chief Justice William Howard Taft .
In 1917, he married Louise Taft and, after Burnam’s death, Semple, as departmental head (1920-1950), with the help of his wife embarked on lifelong mission to create, through the investment of their own personal fortune, the finest Classics department in North America.
