John Montagu, Marquess of Monthermer, 1st Baron Montagu of Boughton (18 March 1735 – 11 April 1770) was a British peer. Life [ edit ] He was born John Brudenell , the eldest son of George Brudenell, 4th Earl of Cardigan , by his wife Mary, daughter of John Montagu, 2nd Duke of Montagu .

When our Edward Montagu succeeded his father in 1602, he added what is called the Monthermer eagle to the arms and claimed descent from John Neville, first Marquess of Montagu who died in 1471. In 1605 he was challenged by Anthony Browne, the 2nd Viscount Montagu, in the Court of the College of Heralds, and lost.
