Naturalist John Muir, who had joined him on the 1899 Alaska expedition, wrote in his eulogy of Harriman, "In almost every way, he was a man to admire."

Roland Harriman was elected into the Living Hall of Fame in 1961. He died in 1978 at his home in Arden, New York. He was a founder, president and chairman of the board of The Trotting Horse Museum/The Hall of Fame of the Trotter, now known as the Harness Racing Museum & Hall of Fame.
