Christian Friedrich (or Frederick) Wilhelm von der Ahe (German: [fɔn dɐ ˈʔaːhə]; October 7, 1851 – June 5, 1913) was a German-American entrepreneur, best known as the owner of the St. Louis Brown Stockings of the American Association, now known as the St. Louis Cardinals.
Written by: Matt Kelly. Chris von der Ahe’s meteoric rise to baseball prominence predated the modern-day World Series. His reputation as an original baseball entrepreneur, however, has made him a Hall of Fame finalist for the Class of 2016.

print. Christian Frederick Wilhelm Von der Ahe, a pioneering figure in early professional baseball, was born on October 7, 1851, in Hille, Germany, and emigrated to the United States in 1867. Beginning in St. Louis as a grocery clerk, Von der Ahe had saved enough by 1870 to acquire a small combination grocery and saloon.
