He started to become known outside Latvia in the 1990s, when Gidon Kremer started championing his works and now is one of the most influential and praised European contemporary composers. Vasks' early style owed much to the aleatoric experiments of Witold Lutosławski, Krzysztof Penderecki and George Crumb.

Pēteris Vasks was appointed as the Main Composer of the Stockholm New Music Festival in 1996. The same year, he was awarded the Herder Prize from the Alfred Toepfer Foundation and the Baltic Assembly Prize.
The great composer Peteris Vasks (16.04.1946.) was born in Aizpute (Latvia) in the family of baptist pastor. He attended Emils Darzins Music School in Riga (1959-1964), where he studied double bass and produced first compositions.
