The Outcasts of Poker Flat película dirigida por Christy Cabanne y protagonizada por Preston Foster, Jean Muir, Van Heflin - Sinopsis: Un campamento minero de California está plagado de una serie de asesinatos. Cuatro personas son sospechosas de los homicidios y son expulsadas del campo.
Lee entonces la obra de Harte titulada Outcasts of Poker Flat (Los parias de Poker Flat) y ve en ella similitudes con su propia situación (John Oakhurst traba amistad con Sophy cuando ésta se halla a punto de suicidarse. Oakhurst lleva a Sophy a Poker Flat e intenta convencerla para que se case con su hijo Tommy.
