First English Civil War. William Cavendish, 1st duke of Newcastle-upon-Tyne (born c. 1593—died December 25, 1676, Welbeck, Nottinghamshire, England) was a Royalist commander during the English Civil Wars and a noted patron of poets, dramatists, and other writers.
After the defeat at Marston Moor in July 1644, a battle fought against his advice, he went into exile in Europe. He returned to England after the Stuart Restoration in 1660, and although created Duke of Newcastle in 1665, he remained on the fringes of the court and became critical of Charles II.

William was renowned for his abilities as an athlete and scholar. His interests in art and science were wide-ranging. He was a significant patron of the arts - supporting both authors and musicians - and wrote poetry and drama himself.
