Pierre Samuel "Pete" du Pont IV (January 22, 1935 – May 8, 2021) was an American attorney, businessman, and politician who served as the 68th governor of Delaware from 1977 to 1985. A member of the Republican Party, he was the United States representative for Delaware's at-large congressional district from 1971 to 1977.
Pierre Samuel du Pont (/ d uː ˈ p ɒ n t /; January 15, 1870 – April 4, 1954) was an American entrepreneur, businessman, philanthropist and member of the prominent du Pont family. He was president of DuPont from 1915 to 1919, and was on its board of directors until 1940.
Pierre Samuel du Pont, IV (1935 -2021), known to many as "Pete," served as Delaware's lone Congressman from 1971 to 1977, and as the sixty-eighth governor of Delaware from 1977 to 1985. In 1987, du Pont started his campaign for president, running as a Republican candidate.
PIERRE SAMUEL “PETE” DU PONT IV was born in Wilmington, Delaware, the son of Pierre Samuel du Pont, III and Jane Holcomb du Pont. He attended Phillips Exeter Academy, N.H., Princeton University, and Harvard Law School. He served as a U.S. Naval Reserve Officer as part of the Seabees from 1957-1960.
