  1. Denzil Holles, 1st Baron Holles, JP, PC (31 October 1598 – 17 February 1680) was an English statesman, best remembered as one of the Five Members whose attempted arrest by Charles I in January 1642 sparked the First English Civil War.

  3. He was again accused of treason by the New Model Army in 1647 and was subsequently secluded from Parliament. After living privately for most the 1650s he was raised to the peerage after the Restoration, becoming a prominent diplomat and privy councillor in the 1660s.

  4. Holles had been a determined opponent of Charles I, both in and out of Parliament, and commanded a regiment against the King in the 1642 campaign. His brother changed sides no less than three times in the Civil War, and Holles himself soon became eager for a peaceful settlement.

  5. Holles served as a captain under the Earl of Warwick against the northern earls in 1569, and later was an active justice of the peace (until he was removed in 1587 for having lands assessed for the subsidy at only £15).
