He was originally a supporter of James II but later supported the Glorious Revolution in 1688. He held high office under Queen Anne, daughter of his sister Anne Hyde, but their frequent disagreements limited his influence.

  4. Laurence Hyde was the second son of the historian and lord chancellor and younger brother of the 2nd earl of Clarendon, lord privy seal and lord-lieutenant of Ireland in James II's reign. His sister Anne married the duke of York (later James II) in 1660 and died in 1671.
