James Speed (March 11, 1812 – June 25, 1887) was an American lawyer, politician, and professor who was in 1864 appointed by Abraham Lincoln to be the United States Attorney General. Speed previously served in the Kentucky legislature and in local political offices.
James Speed was born in 1812 in Jefferson County, Kentucky. He attended St. Joseph’s College and Transylvania University, studied the law, and was admitted to the state bar in 1833. Speed practiced law in Louisville, Kentucky, until he was elected to the state legislature in 1847.
