  3. Wharton, Thomas (1648–1715), 1st marquess of Wharton , lord lieutenant of Ireland, was born in August 1648 at Watford in Hertfordshire. He was the third but first surviving son of Philip, 4th Baron Wharton, and his second wife, Jane.

  4. Thomas Wharton Wharton, 1st marquess of, 1648–1715, English politician. Before his entry into Parliament (1673) he had acquired the reputation as a rake and gambler that he retained for life. After 1679 he became active in Whig politics, supporting the attempt to exclude the duke of York (later James II) from the succession.

  5. Biography. The Whartons were minor Westmorland gentry, tenants and followers of the Cliffords, but Thomas Wharton’s father had also served the crown. The date of his death is unknown but his son became a ward of the 10th Lord Clifford, who sold the wardship for 200 marks.
