Hiram Leong Fong (born Yau Leong Fong; October 15, 1906 – August 18, 2004) was an American businessman, lawyer, and politician from Hawaii. Born to a Cantonese immigrant sugar plantation worker, Fong was one of the first two senators for Hawaii after it became the 50th US state in 1959.

Hiram L. Fong, a son of Chinese immigrants who became a millionaire businessman and the first Asian-American elected to the U.S. Senate, died Wednesday. He was 97.
The son of Chinese immigrants, Fong was also the first U.S. senator of Asian ancestry. During his nearly 18 years in the Senate, Fong advocated civil rights and voting rights legislation and immigration reform that sought to prevent discrimination against Asians.
