George Poindexter (1779 – September 5, 1853) was an American politician, lawyer, and judge from Mississippi. Born in Virginia, he moved to the Mississippi Territory in 1802. He served as United States Representative from the newly admitted state, was elected as Governor (1820–1822), and served as a United States senator .

George Poindexter (poin´dĕk´stər), 1779–1853, American political leader, b. Louisa co., Va. After practicing law in Virginia, he moved (1802) to Mississippi. As attorney general of Mississippi he took part in the efforts to bring Aaron Burr to trial.
Montana native and New York commodity broker Everton Gentry “George” Poindexter wanted to give the state historical society a painting in memory of his father, Joseph Boyd Poindexter, a former Montana attorney general and governor of Hawaii Territory. The offer to donate the memorial was not startling, but the choice of painting certainly was.
