  4. Lieutenant-General Sir Julian Byng commanded the Canadian Corps on the Western Front from May 1916 to June 1917. He forged the Canadians into an elite fighting formation, leading them through the battles of Mount Sorrel, the Somme, and Vimy Ridge.

  5. In March 1916 Byng was awarded a kcb (dated to 1 January) for his service in Gallipoli, and he spent the next two months in command of the 17th Corps at Vimy Ridge. In late May 1916 Byng was ordered to replace Lieutenant-General Edwin Alfred Hervey Alderson* as commander of the Canadian Corps.
