William Maxwell Evarts (February 6, 1818 – February 28, 1901) was an American lawyer and statesman from New York who served as U.S. Secretary of State, U.S. Attorney General and U.S. Senator from New York.

William Maxwell Evarts (born Feb. 6, 1818, Boston—died Feb. 28, 1901, New York City) was a U.S. lawyer and statesman who took part successfully in the three greatest public cases of his generation.

From 1849 to 1852, Evarts served as the assistant U.S. district attorney for the Southern District of New York. He returned to private practice during the remainder of the decade and throughout the Civil War.
