Thomas Lister, 4th Baron Ribblesdale was born on 29 October 1854. He was the son of Thomas Lister, 3rd Baron Ribblesdale and Emma Mure. He married, firstly, Charlotte Monkton Tennant, daughter of Sir Charles Tennant of The Glen, 1st Bt. and Emma Winsloe, on 7 April 1877.
