  5. With the exception of the Labour Government 1929-31, Wood was continuously in high office from 1925 until his sudden death in 1943. He was a junior health minister alongside Neville Chamberlain, Postmaster-General 1931-35, Health Minister 1935-38, Air Minister 1938-40 and then Chancellor of the Exchequer.

  6. The most notable exception is Sir Kingsley Wood, Churchill’s first Chancellor of the Exchequer. Wood’s sudden death in September 1943 precluded an autobiography, while the non-existence of any personal papers left by Wood has long discouraged historians from undertaking studies of his life.
