  3. JOHN NEVILLE, Marquis of Montagu and Earl of Northumberland, third son of Richard Neville, Earl of Salisbury, and Alice, daughter and heiress of Thomas de Montacute or Montagu, fourth Earl of Salisbury, was born between 1428 and 1435.

  4. The title of Marquess of Montagu was created in 1470 for John Neville, 1st Earl of Northumberland, younger brother of Warwick the Kingmaker. Montagu was killed at the Battle of Barnet in 1471, and was attainted and the peerage forfeit.

  5. On 25 March 1470, Henry Percy was restored to the earldom of Northumberland and its estates and, in return, John Neville was made Marquess of Montagu (Somerset). As the title came with no estates, John felt cheated and objected and, in doing so, he lost the trust of the king.
