Francesco Severi (13 April 1879 – 8 December 1961) was an Italian mathematician. He was the chair of the committee on Fields Medal on 1936, at the first delivery. Severi was born in Arezzo, Italy. He is famous for his contributions to algebraic geometry and the theory of functions of several complex variables.

Francesco Severi è stato un matematico italiano, fra i maggiori rappresentanti della Scuola italiana di geometria algebrica.
A Taste for Politics. Born in 1879 the youngest of nine children, Francesco Severi grew up in poverty in the Tus-can town of Arezzo, where as a boy he took a keen interest in politics, following in particu-lar the socialist movement, then on the rise in Italy.
