The son of Aleksandr Zubov, Count Valerian Zubov was the youngest and most talented brother of Platon Zubov, one of Catherine the Great's favourites. He began his service in the Guards Preobrazhensky Regiment and was later transferred to the cavalry where he was made a cornet at the age of 17.

Valerian Zubov (1771–1804), who while serving under Suvorov in Poland, married a Princess Lubomirska and lost his leg in a battle. At the time of Catherine's death in 1796 he was leading the Russian army in Persia.
Command was given to Pavel Tsitsianov, Bulgakov, Alexander Korsakov, Baron Levin August, Count Fyodor Apraksin, and Matvei Platov, while the commander-in-chief was Lieutenant-General Count Valerian Zubov.
Catherine II gave Rundāle Manor as a present to Count Valerian Zubov who died in 1804. During the distribution of inheritance Rundāle became the property of his brother Prince Platon Zubov, the last favourite of Catherine II.
