As a younger brother of Claude Bowes-Lyon, 14th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne, who was Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon's father, he was a great-uncle of Queen Elizabeth II and Herbert Bowes-Lyon who also played tennis.
