Rhydderch Hael (English: Rhydderch the Generous), Riderch I of Alt Clut, or Rhydderch of Strathclyde, (fl. 580 – c. 614) was a ruler of Alt Clut, a Brittonic kingdom in the Hen Ogledd or "Old North" of Britain.
Riderch I of Alt Clut, Rhydderch of Strathclyde, Rodarchus. King of Cumbria in Myrddin legend, probably based on a historical sixth-century ruler of Stratchclyde. Rhydderch is mainly remembered for his association with the legendary figure of Merlin, who was said to have been his adviser and counsellor.
The kingdom was ruled from Dumbarton Rock, Alt Clut, the Brythonic name of the rock, until around 870 when the rock was captured and sacked by Norse-Gaels from the kingdom of Dublin after a four-month siege.
14 de ago. de 2020 · Many of Alt Clut's kings are obscure or are only poorly attested. Only two stand out - Coroticus and Rhiderch Hael. Many of the others are often only known by the Welsh or Irish versions of their names.
14 de ago. de 2016 · Riderch was the king of Alt Clut (Dumbarton). Gwendollau was defeated and his court magician Myrddin (Merlin) went mad with grief and fled to the woods of Celidon where he lived on wild food and became a prophet. Arthuret Knowes.

Thereafter the centre of the kingdom moved to Govan, previously a religious centre.
